Join us and kick start your career in IT.
The Met Office operates enterprise IT at scale, working at the cutting edge of the technology industry. We operate the world’s largest supercomputer dedicated to weather and climate and are exploiting emerging cloud technologies to help deliver our products and services to our customers. With around 400 technology professionals, you will have access to a vast range of experience and skills to help your personal development.
As an apprentice at the Met Office, you will have the opportunity to spend 4 years gaining experience across a range of different technology fields, building a broad level of capability before specialising in a particular area for the final two years. This approach provides not only a breadth of technology experience, but also supports the development of a wider network of colleagues that can prove beneficial for future career development. You will gain a BSc (Hons) in Digital and Technology Solutions and receive a reward package including 27.5 days holiday and a starting salary of £17,000 that increases each year.
Working at our Exeter HQ, you will be based near the scenic surfing beaches of North Devon, rugged Exmoor and Dartmoor as well as be able to enjoy the variety of clubs and societies available, much like those you’d expect to find at university!
Many Trainee’s and Industrial Placements in IT at the Met Office have successfully progressed into valued senior members of teams. With approximately 400 IT staff on site in Exeter, we offer a very real opportunity for progression in a multitude of areas in technology.
Individuals will be expected to build their technical knowledge in a variety of disciplines, supported by local mentors and a defined work plan. As skills develop, individuals will contribute to the wider objectives of their team through participation in office wide projects or service delivery activities. No day is the same, but you could expect to be developing a new product to meet a customer need, installing and configuring critical networking equipment that supports our 24x7 operation or working with our Cyber Security Operations Centre to ensure our services are protected from external threats.
We would look for you to join us in September 2019. Working hours are Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm to include one day per week ‘off-the-job' training spent working on content delivered by the University through an online learning environment. You will also attend three residentials of three to four days duration at the University during the academic year.
This apprenticeship is demanding and will require you to be able to balance the level of study required. You will be supported by your peers, line manager, supervisor and mentor at the Met Office as well as having access to support from the training provider, but a large element of the programme necessitates self-motivation.
Where candidates are awaiting exam results, any offer made will be conditional on meeting the entry requirements.
