Job Description

Salary will start at £73,365 with opportunities to progress within the role up to the maximum of £97,924 plus organisational bonus and personal bonus opportunity and highly competitive Civil Service pension.

You may also be eligible to claim relocation costs of up to £8,000.

As an Executive Agency of the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, one of the Met Office’s key aims is to translate deep science into social and economic benefit – helping UK businesses improve productivity, stimulating new markets and encouraging high-tech regional growth. We are now looking for a new Director of our Business Group. The holder of this job is responsible for the Met Office’s services to industry. These services help weather sensitive businesses to operate safely, efficiently and successfully, safeguarding critical infrastructure, enabling businesses to manage weather and climate risks, and protect lives


Job Purpose:

As a Director of the Business group you will set direction, lead and develop the services the Met Office provides to build appropriate commercial markets, to deliver the Met Office purpose and aim in industry. This includes aviation, surface transport, energy, infrastructure and retail, and covers both operational weather services as well as helping industry adapt to a changing climate.


Job Responsibilities:

  1. To secure profitable delivery of Met Office goals in industry, you will work collaboratively with Directors and senior managers to direct the development, implementation and realisation of business strategy.
  2. Lead, inspire and manage the Business Group Directorate to retain, attract, recruit and develop staff, resulting in staff engagement and achieving the corporate goals in industry.
  3. Deliver end-to-end services and contract delivery in industry through the inclusive leadership of a senior team and multi-disciplinary groups, focusing on strong customer experience at all points within the delivery chain.
  4. Direct strategic research activity to improve market intelligence and customer experience in industry to yield deep insight into customer behaviour, needs and wants to inform strategic growth and resource allocation plans.
  5. Act as a custodian for developing business skills and capability, sharing insight across the wider business.
  6. Develop and maintain a sustainable investment portfolio of product and service development to deliver Met Office aims for industry.
  7. Ensure a continuous pipeline of key talent for customer & stakeholder management roles encouraging continuing professional development to provide flexibility for the organisation to address its current and future challenges.
  8. Support the governance of Met Office activity and delivery of wider corporate Met Office strategy and business objectives.


Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Demonstrable experience of successfully operating at Board level, bringing both excellent business and service acumen to persuade and influence the corporate business agenda.
  2. A track record of successfully building, leading, developing and engaging a substantial business-driven service team to deliver concrete results in industry markets.
  3. Experience of operating and developing business in technical and scientific markets, with proven inter-personal skills to lead negotiations with major stakeholders including direct senior commercial negotiations.
  4. Demonstrable ability to strategically review the external business environment and identify opportunities to yield a broad, balanced, sustainable and profitable customer and product base.
  5. A proven track record of continually developing internal business capabilities, through people and product portfolios and matching these to the emerging external business environment.
  6. Built and maintained successful relationships with key stakeholders internally and externally that has resulted in sustainable revenue and profit generation and the delivery of corporate goals.


Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

  1. A scientific background in related disciplines to weather & climate science or demonstrate the ability to rapidly gain familiarity with new technical areas.
  2. Experience of both private and public sectors, and dealings with UK government would be useful.
  3. Successfully led the identification and development of innovative market leading products & services and has secured complex product development programmes.
  4. Experience of designing innovative pricing structures.

Please note, when joining the Met Office all new employees will start on the salary band minimum.

This role will nominally be based at our Exeter HQ but we will consider applicants wishing to work elsewhere within the UK.

Developed Vetting (DV) maybe a requirement of this role at a later date.
